About I'm Not There
Since arriving in New York City’s folk music scene in the 1960s, American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan has become a major figure in popular music, influencing millions with his chart topping songs. His records have earned Grammys, Golden Globes, and Academy Awards, and he has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Featuring the Oscar® nominated and Golden Globe® winning* performance by Cate Blanchett (Elizabeth: The Golden Age, The Aviator), I’M NOT THERE weaves together a daring and complex narrative of an ever-elusive American icon. Garnering three awards at the 2007 Venice Film Festival, including Special Jury Prize and Best Actress, Cate Blanchett, I’M NOT THERE was recently awarded the honorary Robert Altman Award at the 2008 Spirit Awards. Academy Award® nominated director Todd Haynes (Far From Heaven) dramatizes the complexities of this gifted artist’s protean existence while giving imaginative shape to the various aspects of both his life and work.
I’M NOT THERE features an all-star cast with six actors each portraying a different aspect of Bob Dylan including Blanchett, Christian Bale (Rescue Dawn), Richard Gere (Chicago), the late Heath Ledger (Brokeback Mountain) as well as Ben Whishaw (Layer Cake) and Marcus Carl Franklin (“Law & Order”). Also featuring a stellar supporting cast including Julianne Moore (Children of Men) and Michelle Williams (Brokeback Mountain), I’M NOT THERE skillfully combines a biographical tale with ponderous metaphors and legendary myths. Presenting a versatile and creative use of Dylan’s music, only Franklin performs his song with his own voice, the rest of the soundtrack mixes original Dylan recordings with existing covers, including new versions by a variety of musicians including Ritchie Havens, Iggy Pop, John Doe and Sonic Youth, among others
